About Himawari Yama
At Himawari Yama Dojo we teach the Japanese martial arts of jodo and Iaido. Founded in 2005 by Thomas Bengston Sensei, Himawari Yama remains the only Dojo to teach and practice these arts in Northern Nevada. Our instructors are licensed, through Musokan, by the All Japan Kendo Federation (Zen Nippon Kendo Renmei).
We welcome you to join us in these challenging and exciting Martial Arts. We are currently located in Reno, Nevada, at the Evelyn Mount Community Center.
About the Arts
“Jodo is a Japanese martial art, that employs the weapon knows as a Jo. The main purpose or aim of ]odo lies in defeating the opponent without attacking. Its spirit is not to injure the opponent, but to utilize the techniques thereby demonstrating the true versatility of the weapon. The meaning of this spirit lies outside the normal understanding of the image of combat.”
From the Zen Nippon Kendo Renmei Jodo Manual
Iaido is the art of traditional Japanese swordsmanship. Practicioners strive to perfect the smooth controlled motions of cutting from the draw, at the moment the sword leaves the saya (scabbard). Iaido is practiced by martial artists around the world in various styles, all of which have non combative aims and purposes. Iaido is a deeply rooted form of modern Japanese Budo.
Himawari Yama is associated with Musokan, an iemoto formed to promote and support koryu, particularly Shindo Muso Ryu through interaction, education and demonstrations. The testing and grading of jodo candidates for Zen Nippon Kendo Renmei (ZNKR) ranking comes under the auspices of this association.
